Toughest Times Since The Depression

Do you understand the weekly unemployment stats?

Nine Percent Unemployment certainly doesn’t sound encouraging, but here’s that percentage means when it trickles down to your neighborhood:

IN the United States when 9.1% are unemployed, it means that14 million Americans are out of work.  That number has stayed constant since last APRIL.  America hasn’t had a rough patch quite like this, since the Depression.   Here’s a break down from the Labor Department of just WHO is unemployed:

ADULT MEN:  8.9 percent  (or most)

ADULT WOMEN:  8.0 percent

TEENS:  25 percent

WHITES  8 percent

BLACKS  16.7 percent

HISPANICS  11.3 percent

ASIANS  7.1 percent

INVOLUNTARILY WORKING PART-TIME  8.8. MILLION

LONGTERM UNEMPLOYED?  (over 27 weeks)   6.0 MILLION Americans or 43% of all those unemployed have been out a long time.

HOW MANY IN AMERICA ARE WORKING AND COULD PAY TAX?  About 58%.

American families need jobs, not handouts.

  1. NO ONE is including the independent workers in any of the unemployed statistics. I cannot believe how consistent this has been to exclude millions of additional members of the workforce that aren’t quantified because they are not eligible for unemployment insurance (so they have no place to go for that kind of help.) This includes anyone who is self-employed like consultants, independent truck drivers, home hair care salons, independent daycares, notaries, independent maids, and anyone under an independent contract. It’s a HUGE number that continues to be ignored. I’m one of them and there are many many more besides me!

  2. You are so TERRIBLY correct. Carolyn, isn’t it true though that many self-employed UNEMPLOYED, DO petition for benefits? And receive them? Perhaps on past work histories?

  3. I lost my job 2 1/2 years ago as an engineer. I work as contract labor whenever work comes along. Since the begining of this year, there is absolutely no work. I am a widow with 2 college kids to support. I was denied unemployment benefits since I am considered self employed. I just don’t know how long we can go on like this. The American dream is dead.

  4. Sheela: hang on and never give up. I ache for you, and also know the cost of two in college. Everyday I get up, I am thinking about talented women like you who are pulling the family locomotive on your own and fighting the economy everyday. Any job is a good job today, and every woman in America has got to form a line to the polls andSTOP THIS MADNESS! A woman like you should have a career position you can count on. Sonja Eddings Brown

  5. Sonja: Like most immigrants with an empty pocket & a brain filled with dreams, I came to America 26 yrs ago to chase the American dream. With a graduate degree in elec engineering, I thought I would survive and do alright after the death of my husband 13 yrs ago. I single handedly raised 2 kids who are at MIT & Harvard. All these 13 years we were never afraid about the future. Now I am so freightened not only for us but every kid who is getting a college degree hoping for a career. I know so many engineering graduates mowing lawns working minimum wage jobs. This is not the America I envisioned – with hard work & dedication you can reach for the stars. I don’t know if politicians have damaged this country or it is just the global economy. One thing for sure if these politicians have dampened the American Spirit. Thanks for your words of encouagement. I have survived selling anything in the house that is not chained to the ground. I hope my kids with an Ivy league education are able to find jobs & pay off their massive loans. I want to see my country be the Best in the world like it was 25 yrs ago. Not a dysfunctional beauracratic entity. Thank you all for your support.
