Gingrich In Deep, Dark Trouble
January 27, 2012

Something Was "Off" With Gingrich....It Was Bad News.

AT last night’s debate, it was clear that Newt Gingrich was unhappy.  CNN photographed the frontrunner walking into the debate.  He was sunken.  As he walked out on the stage, he didn’t look happy, or really even healthy.  During the national anthem his face was dark, and distant.  Like bad news had landed.  Here it is:

1- Every poll reporting today from Rasmussen to Quinnipiac shows Romney up by between seven and nine points.  The impact of last night’s debate is excluded from these long-range polls.  That is still to come.

2- Just in…national leaders of America’s space program have written an open letter in support of Mitt Romney.

3- Gingrich is suddenly taking a beating from former colleagues on The Hill.  Privately, Gingrich probably views it as his own “Right Wing Conspiracy.”  What it is, is the truth.  Despite the extraordinary record Gingrich boasts during his time as Speaker of the House, none of his colleagues are supporting or endorsing his leadership record, and only 11 sitting elected officials are supporting his campaign.  This is not a conspiracy, this is the writing on the wall.

4- Gingrich’s problem is that a flare has been fired into the sky.  All those up for re-election on the GOP ticket this year, are realizing that they are doomed if they are DOWN-TICKET from a Newt Gingrich nomination.  South Carolina was a media…accident.  He rode a soundbite to a win.

BUT THERE’S MORE, and it probably explains the gloomy countenance Gingrich brought to the debate:

Former Governor Jeb Bush

5- Jeb Bush, who refuses to endorse, essentially did so by calling Gingrich out yesterday for trying to align Mitt Romney with disliked former Florida Charlie Crist…simply because a former staffer of his is part of the Romney campaign.  Jeb Bush came forward and said, “That’s not a serious accusation.  Candidates win elections.  I’m not a big Charlie Crist fan as you recall, but these guys shouldn’t have that moniker attached to them as if Governor Romney is part of some evil plot. That’s ridiculous.”

AND A DEATH BLOW:

6- “Gingrich’s dependency on gambling magnate Sheldon Adelson is landing both patron and recipient in hot water. ABC News reports:

The casino company run by the principal financial backer of Newt Gingrich’s presidential bid, Sheldon Adelson, has been under criminal investigation for the last year by the Department of Justice and the Securities Exchange Commission for alleged bribery of foreign officials, according to corporate documents.

In a separate civil lawsuit, a former executive of the company has alleged that Adelson ordered him to keep quiet about sensitive issues at the Sands casinos on the Chinese island of Macau, including the casinos’ alleged “involvement with Chinese organized crime groups, known as Triads, connected to the junket business.” The triads — Chinese organized crime syndicates — are allegedly involved in organizing high stakes gambling junkets for wealthy Chinese travelers.

Gingrich Wearing Thin

Gingrich gets tarred by the association and Adelson, who was never a household name before Gingrich made him one, is suddenly getting public scrutiny unlike any he has ever received.”

Last night’s debate?  Unfortunately the highpoint of Gingrich’s day.

  1. Kitchen ladies you will regret not making this debate plain.  It is understandable that Sanctorum the conservative is bringing up Newts problems.  If you decide that it is okay to obliterate every conservative protestant off the face of the continent–you know newt is a new Roman Catholic, you will live to regret this.  I don’t care what the east coast Republicans have to say about Newt — this will end up being another Obama adminstration if all the westerners decide that this is not time for a Romney Presidency.  Watch yourselves here.

  2. Sorry Kathryn, but at some point you establishment republicans will have no choice but to go to a truly conservative platform, or perrish as a viable party.
Your man Romney brings absolutely nothing to the table that hasn’t plagued the republican party ever since Reagan left office.  Romney defines “Establishment GOP”, and that is the very reason Gingrich doesn’t have incumbent congressmen backing him.  In Gingrich we finally have an opportunity to break the RINO plague.
Kitchen ladies and gentlement alike;  don’t make the same mistake over and over again, expecting a different result.  Romney is the “No-Hope, No-Change option for the GOP old-timers who don’t want their chains rattled.  Same thing in a new wrapper.
Romneys are the reason for the Tea Party, and the reason Ron Paul, as ridiculous as he can be, manages to stay in the primary race.
Gingrich is the only choice if the primary objective is to get Obama out.
Don’t you wonder why the Obama camp quietly supports Romney?

  3. Jeff..well argued. But how do you reconcile the fact that only 22% of Republicans believe Newt Gingrich can defeat Barack Obama? Everyone thinks it would be great TV to DEBATE Obama…but we need to WIN to hold the Supreme Court and to pry Barack Obama out of the Oval Office. Gingrich, even when he’s winning, only gets Conservatives the votes we already have. This election is going to be extremely close, and the demographics of the country favor Democrats. We have to win the MIDDLE. How badly do you want to win? At least Romney knows how to negotiate a global tariff. Few dispute his integrity.

  4. Sonja, we make the same argument, but with different name association.  I don’t know where you get your statistics, so I won’t bother with a debate over your numbers.  Suffice to say that stats can be manipulated to talk to whatever position their presenter wants them to support.
I favor Gingrich for his demonstrated fiscal conservatism.  Conversely, I dislike Romney for his demonstrated big government, big spender record.  Romney is not a fiscal conservative by anyone’s definition.  Gingrich would destroy Obama in a one on one campaign – even Romney supporters agree to that.  Romney can’t stand up to an incumbent President – especially Obama with his flare for manipulating the ignorant voter.
So it appears we agree that job 1 is to remove Obama.  A “more of the same RINO”, Romney, won’t win the independent vote.  Gingrich can win a significant margin when Santorum quits, he will win a piece of the Paul support provided Paul doesn’t go independent, and he is far closer to Tea Party fiscal conservative values than Romney.
    Ask yourself

  5. Thanks Jeff.  If we were truly making a choice based on past policies, I guess you could find a way to side with Newt as a fiscal conservative.  But I will always put my money on a guy who has to spend and save money that is his own..to watch over taxpayer money.  OVER someone who makes a career of walking on marble!  Can’t trust any of them!

Gingrich’s problem isn’t his policies, or his experience.  It’s his inability to control HIMSELF.  Most in the Cabinet respect his mind, but no one dares trust him when nobody’s looking.  Character AND Skills.  We deserve it Jeff.  And we shouldn’t be paying these politicians unless they have it.  thanks for your views.  Thought provoking.

  6. Jeff,  I totally agree with your analogy of what is going on.  It disgusts me and saddens me, but the republican establishment is looking out for themselves just as you state above.  And the Kitchen Cabinet is trying to make this sound like it is something significantly important in reflecting that Newt is not a good choice.   I hear vague accusations regarding Newts record, but I have heard no substantial facts to support it, just opinions of other politicians.   The article above is an example of this.  Disappointing again.  Seriously, Jeb Bush’s explanation about christi and disagreement with how Newt handled that is not an endorsement of anyone.  You are reading too much into it.  Is this what journalism has become.  Where are the facts?  Just the facts without all your editoralizing?  This is what I am looking for.

  7. So why are we even trying for a different presidential sandwich when the only difference is PB&J with crusts or PB&J without crusts?
Why can’t primary elections be more like Subway?  Let me pick out my own sandwich, thank you very much!  I don’t want a politician!  I want a representative of WE THE PEOPLE!  No wonder those tea partiers are so fed up!

  8. Hi,
Who are the 11 elected officials supporting Gingrich, and can you please provide the source? Thanks!
