The Cain Train….Slowing To A Messy Stop
November 29, 2011

"Me Thinks He Doth Protest Too Much?"

The Los Angeles Times details the scrambling, undisciplined, non-campaign of Herman Cain today on its front page.  Of course the paper is not friendly to a single conservative, but the facts of the story are not exclusive to the Times.

Unfortunately, even friends of the Cain campaign are tiring of excuses such as the one he tried while stalling with Wolf Blitzer yesterday:

“See, what this says is, is that somebody is awfully afraid that I’m doing too well in this Republican nomination to continue to dig up these stories to try and put a cloud and a damper on my campaign,” Cain said.

Even if it’s painful, you have to read about Cain’s messy trail across the United States.

“Herman Cain will try again to right his listing ship Tuesday in a speech at Hillsdale College in Michigan, even as he is dogged by yet more allegations of sexual impropriety—this time from an Atlanta woman who claims she had a 13-year affair with Cain.

But the fact that the speech is in Michigan and not in a state such as Iowa or South Carolina may tell you all you need to know about the ultimate destination for the Cain Train.

After Michigan, Cain moves on to–Ohio. A critical general election state to be sure. A key early battleground for GOP presidential hopefuls? Not so much.

And trouble—the kind of logistical trouble that has hampered Cain throughout his quixotic bid—awaits. The Hill newspaper

On A Rocky Campaign Trail, Often Disorganized And Cluttered With Book Tour Stops

reported Tuesday that Cain was forced to cancel an event outside of Cleveland over confusion about the site where the event was to be held. The Cain campaign blamed the local mayor, suggesting the candidate was being blackballed because the “political establishment is afraid” of Cain.

The mixup came on the heels of an earlier snafu, the Hill reported. The original Cain event schedule listed all times in Central time. Ohio is in the Eastern time zone.

If the line about the establishment being fearful of Cain sounds familiar, it’s because Cain uses it often, particularly with regard to the sexual misconduct allegations that have ensnared his campaign for more than a month. On Monday, during his preemptive interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, aired live before the report on the alleged affair had even emerged, Cain continued in that vein.

“See, what this says is, is that somebody is awfully afraid that I’m doing too well in this Republican nomination to continue to dig up these stories to try and put a cloud and a damper on my campaign,” Cain said.

Except Cain isn’t doing all that well any longer. His window to challenge Mitt Romney for the GOP nomination is shutting rapidly, with Newt Gingrich capitalizing on Cain’s fadeaway. Even Cain acknowledged as much to Blitzer, conceding that he was dropping in the polls, but noting he hasn’t yet hit bottom.

The CNN interview was a bizarre episode in yet another surreal day for the candidate. Even as he was denying the allegation that he carried on a 13-year affair with an Atlanta woman, Ginger White, his lawyer, Lin Wood, was telling the TV station that was preparing to air the report that Cain would not be discussing the claims.”

The former Godfather Pizza CEO is starting to insult the intelligence of the American people.  Read more:

“And while Cain unequivocally said there was no affair, just a “friendship,” Wood’s statement to Atlanta’s WAGA-TV didn’t contain anything close to a denial; instead, it admonished the media to keep its nose out of Cain’s private life with paperback-rack talk about the conduct of consenting adults.

As each new allegation has surfaced, Cain has continued to suggest that there is more to come. He spoke to Blitzer in almost

Atlanta Businesswoman Ginger White "couldn't bear seeing Herman discredit other women"

mathematical terms, as if being accused of harassment and infidelity was a simple matter of probability.

“I mean, think about it, Wolf. You go through life and you believe that you have some people that are friends.  And when someone that appears to be a friend turns around and concocts this story, you’ve got to question, the hundreds of thousands of people that I have met in my life?,” Cain said. “A hundred thousand people could possibly come out.”
