Romney Clear Winner in Florida GOP Debate
September 22, 2011
Gary Johnson stole the show, but by unanimous decision former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney won the Florida GOP Presidential Debate last evening in Florida. FOX and Google partnered to bring forward one of the most genuine discussions yet, spurred by real questions solicited and voted upon on the internet, and then presented to candidates. Here’s an exchange between Governor Romney and Governor Perry and the sore point of healthcare:
Mitt Romney has turned in three solid debate performances in September, yet he still
slightly trails Texas Governor Rick Perry. His fortunes could be changing. This week’s Gallup Poll shows Mitt Romney gaining in every category against Rick Perry, particularly in key states like South Carolina and Florida. Still the frontrunner though, Rick Perry was dodging attacks all evening, and he was less than convincing on the Texas plan for giving illegal immigrants premium tuition breaks for college. Here’s a summary from Politico:
Three of Perry’s opponents – including his nearest competitor, Mitt Romney – accused the Texas governor of coddling illegal immigrants with a law allowing young people who broke the law by entering the United States to claim in-state tuition benefits in Texas.
“That kind of magnet draws people into this country to get that education,” Romney charged. “We have to turn off the magnet of extraordinary government benefits.”
Under fire from Rick Santorum and Michele Bachmann on the same issue, Perry said he didn’t believe in punishing children who entered the country illegally through no fault of their own.
To candidates who disagree, Perry said: “I don’t think they have a heart.”
“We need to be educating these children because they will become a drag on our society,” Perry said, drawing boos from the audience.
Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson was the homerun hitter of the evening in the Soundbite Sweepstakes. No t really electable, Johnson added intelligent and provocative ideas to the debate, but his home run soundbite as it turns out was stolen from Rush Limbaugh:
Gary Johnson won lots of applause with his “shovel-ready job” joke at the Orlando debate, but it turns out he doesn’t deserve many points for originality:
Just today, talk radio host Rush Limbaugh delivered a similar joke on air.
“My dogs have created more shovel-ready work than Obama has just this week alone,” Limbaugh said. … So what does Limbaugh think of the similarity?
“I guess I’ve become show prep for the GOP debates now, too,” Limbaugh told The Huffington Post in an email.
Johnson acknowledged the overlap in a tweet, writing after the debate: “Re: the dogs, I understand Rush Limbaugh made the same point. Credit to Rush for a great and very true line.”
