First Lady Michelle Obama’s Upscale Menus? YOU Can’t Afford Them.
October 10, 2011

You’ll just say that we’re jealous.  Not so.  The Kitchen Cabinet eats on the run, usually a sandwich while typing, a taco here and there, Subway, local Italian food.  But read what the OBAMAS enjoy when they EAT OUT.  Today Politico.com prints a smattering of what the Obamas have ordered when dining out in Washington-area restaurants.  WHO CAN AFFORD TO EAT LIKE THIS?  IN THESE TIMES?

You will find that the Obamas eat, inside and outside The White House…not like community organizers, but like:  millionaires.  The President talks the talk about “the wealthy giving up more to help the working people.”  Doesn’t look here as if the President and The First Lady are trying to live without much!

1-Mushroom and pumpkin seed tacos, huitlacoche, gazpacho, guacamole, margaritas

and, for dessert, tres leches.

2-Wine almost always for lunch and dinner.  Sometimes “Dirty Martinis.”

3-Soft-shell crab cooked tempura style with a ratatouille sauce and then had the ethereal lobster burger with scallop mousse and housemade chips.

4-Spicy tuna tartar in sesame-miso “ice cream” cones, a combination of buttery raw tuna in a crispy sesame tuile. Tiny dumplings, with tender skins and such enchanting fillings as wild field mushroom or garlic chives followed. For the main course, the first lady chose the wok-fired lobster with Chinese garlic sauce; the president had a prime filet with smoked onion chili sauce.

5-Rack of lamb with preserved lemon and mint salad and chick pea puree with green beans and sun-dried tomatoes. She had white wine to begin and red wine for the lamb, treating herself to a bittersweet molten chocolate cake with cappuccino ice cream.

6-Rappahannock oysters with apple and celery root mousseline; going on to a strip loin with thinly sliced Yukon gold potato and wilted spinach, followed by vanilla ice cream and caramelized bananas. She drank a cabernet sauvignon. At lunch with the first lady of Mexico, she had herbed potato gnocchi with black trumpet mushrooms and pulled chicken salad with cashews and cranberries, followed by warm ricotta beignets.

7-Perfectly fried oysters, sharing some deliciously crisp fried green tomatoes that were served with avocado and corn salsa and tomato relish. The hanger steak came with fried onion rings and succotash, followed by strawberry shortcake.

8- Last week?  10-ounce ribeye steak with deep-fried oysters, a lady-size nugget of venison au poivre and a light little corn cake. White and red wines were served, and just before dessert, the chef’s riff on a miniature Waldorf salad with wine-poached apple balls, candied walnuts,

raisins poached in port and baby celery. The president had homemade lavender mascarpone in a buttery puff pastry circle. Her splurge for dessert: a log-shaped, flourless chocolate cake with a rosemary ganache.

How do you stay in touch with everyday people Mr. President?  Union workers who carry lunch boxes and teachers who carry a thermos to work?  Perhaps we need to make the lifestyle of “Leader of the Free World” a little less like that of a SUPERSTAR.

  1. Thanks for sharing. It is now up to individuals to inform each other. The media should be ashamed!!!

  2. Hey, the rest of us like that type of food as well – except we get it maybe once or twice a YEAR, as a special treat.  These folks have the entitlement thing DOWN – they believe they are Emperor and Empress of the World and therefore, it’s “do as I say, not as I do.”  I hate to think how bratty their kids will be in a few more years.
