A Private Moment In A Public World For The Kennedys

Truly not a political figure, but a tremendous American figure and icon for women.  The classiest thing about Jackie Kennedy is that she never….talked.  Never gave up her secrets, never told everyone EVERYthing that was on her mind.  She never appeared on Oprah, she didn’t do an in-depth sobbing interview with Barbara Walters, and she kept the most private pieces of herself, for herself.

Arthur Schlessinger, a biographer of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt and a Kennedy family friend, interviewed Jackie one evening, or perhaps two, just a year after the assassination of John F. Kennedy.  Her daughter Caroline describes this period in her mother’s life, as one of “extreme stages of grief.”     Caroline Kennedy permits this interview, which previously had only been excerpted by Schlessinger, to be published as

Her Unspoken Life Made Her An Icon

part of the 50th anniversary of her father’s presidency.

The New York Times gives you a good snapshot of Jaqueline Kennedy’s intimate words here.  No mention of the assassination is made, but there is much about her passion for Jack Kennedy.
