Question: “Are We Adults . . . Or Children?”

Reno Air Crash At Impact

Live Free . . . or Die?

Anytime there’s a new segment of Pajamas Media’s Afterburner, it’s going to be a thoughtful day. Fortunately, today is such a day.

Bill Whittle never shies away from asking the tough questions, and the title question of this post is presented to us during his reflection of the Progressive media’s push for more regulation of, or even banning of events like the recent Reno Air Race where a 64 year-old stunt pilot and eleven people on the ground were killed in that horrific crash of a WWII era P-51 Mustang fighter stunt plane.

The meme being pushed in the media is that the pilot was much too old to be flying such a machine, that the machine was too highly modified to be flown safely, that spectators are always placed too close to the action at such events — and that GOVERNMENT needs to step up and DO SOMETHING about all three of these causes.

Whittle answers back to the effect of, “Sure, if WE are children and not adults, then the government needs to take care of us and protect us from ourselves. However, if we are actually adults, and not children, then we don’t need the constant meddling of the Nanny State in our lives. We need to be free to make our own decisions about risks and rewards.”

This 10 minutes of rational thought is about far more than the potential regulation of air shows in the U.S. It examines what is happening to the very core of what being an “American” means today. As we personally react to events like these, what are we teaching our children about ourselves?

Please enjoy.
(Caution — one quick scene of the crash is too violent for young children.)
