Mitt Romney Surpasses His Father
January 10, 2012
Some might remember that Governor George Romney, Mitt’s father, also ran for president. In 1968, George Romney was a suave, articulate and respected Governor from one
of the most important electoral states in the nation, Michigan. After working his way up through the school of hard knocks and becoming the CEO of American Motors, and then a Governor, he set his sites on the presidency. The VietnamWar was the centerpiece of debate in the U.S. and George Romney went to Vietnam to educate himself. After personally investigating the challenge of war he lost faith in the effort. In 1967, George Romney was asked why he had been an early supporter of the war and he responded in a way that torched his presidential ambitions, saying that he had been “brainwashed” by the U.S. military and diplomatic officials in Vietnam.
Governor George Romney was considered by some to be anti-party by not supporting the war, and his campaign immediately hit the skids. He did well in Iowa, but was forced to drop out of the race before ever getting to New Hampshire.
For Mitt Romney, his win in New Hampshire no doubt has more meaning than anyone else could know.
The full story of George Romney’s presidential bid, and early opposition to the loss of life in Vietnam is here.
