If Mothers Could Be Statesmen . . .
October 5, 2011

Nicole Conley with her daughter, Catherine, visit the grave of Conley's husband, Marine Cpl. Matthew Conley of Greenhill, after family and friends released balloons to observe what would have been his 23rd birthday. Matthew Conley was killed in Iraq on Feb. 18, 2006, eight days before his 22nd birthday and about a month before Catherine's birth.

“Mothers should negotiate between nations.

The mothers of fighting countries would agree:  Stop this killing now.  Stop it now.”

-From the book, “Flags Of Our Fathers” about the Marines who raised the famous flag at Iwo Jima.
