Romney Could Have Used A Big Stick…And Didn’t.
October 23, 2012

If you watched Mitt Romney closely during last night’s final presidential debate, you know he could have leveled Barack Obama on every question, every issue, and every misstep of his administration.

But he didn’t.

Governor Romney didn’t have to.  Because deep down he knows he is going to win this historic battle, and Barack Obama knows it too.

Unlike many in politics, Mitt Romney doesn’t believe in a “policy of personal destruction.”

President Obama was vehement, direct, and empty….handed against Romney.

If you turned the volume down on your TV and watched the debate, body language told the whole story.  President Obama was fighting for his life, and in front of 50 million people, his wife, a globe of supporters, and with no script.

Today national columnists are pondering whether Mitt Romney was playing it safe.   The truth is Mitt Romney was principally-focused upon speaking to the remaining disenchanted Democrats and independent and undecided women in the viewing audience.  None appreciates “attack politics.”   Romney played it like he always does:  Smart.

Romney family ALL supported “Dad” and “Grandpa” at the debate. Obama girls were kept at home doing studies.

Interesting observation though?  The Romneys have welcomed their children to witness each of their father’s historic, worldwide debates. Win or lose.  Even their youngest grandchildren missed school or stayed up late and sat in the audience.  Yet the President and Mrs. Obama elected to face the debates alone.  Their teenage daughters didn’t attend even a single one of their Father’s tough encounters.  In some ways the debate battles seemed more of a test for the Obamas, than the Romneys.

During this third battle for the presidency, Governor Romney only fired across the bow on a couple of issues, and both times because they rocked his core:  First, Romney called out the President for breaking the principal rule of leadership in America.  President Obama went abroad and apologized for

Romney had the depth and experience Obama supporters LONGED to see in their candidate.

the greatest country on Earth.  Second, Obama took a job he was never qualified for, devastating American families, raising the debt by trillions of dollars, and undermining every small business trying to keep its doors open.  The Governor could hardly keep his seat discussing the collateral damage.

One of the great moments of the debate has now been transformed into a powerful Romney ad, called “Apology Tour.”

Governor Romney didn’t challenge the President as directly on Libya, as he could have. It was….a gift.

Overall however, Mitt Romney acted with tolerance and with an eye on the future while Barack Obama repeatedly tried to throw wild punches and save face for his Administration.  Instead of attacking the President and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for ignoring pleas for help from their own Libyan Ambassador, he gave them a pass.  What was to be gained?  Virtually every question had already been posed about the President’s motives.  The Administration’s complete failure was already clear.  It was also likely that the Romney camp knew that the Obama administration was about to be “outed” by reporters.  Now Fox News and others have been gifted with inside e-mails revealing that The White House all but ignored the screams of help from its dying representatives overrun by  Al qaeda-linked terrorists. With all this trouble just about to rain down upon Barack Obama’s dying campaign,  Governor Romney simply held his ground and let Obama self-destruct on Monday’s debate stage.

Other politicians?  Would have gone straight for the jugular.

Romney Looked Upon Obama With….the patience of a sound Professor.

Mitt Romney also held his tongue when Jews around the world would have had him expose President Obama’s obvious personal rejections of Israel and his natural propensity to side more with their enemies, than them.

Romney repeated his list of economic woes made worse by Barack Obama’s four years of aimless leadership, but he didn’t embarrass the ill-equipped Obama by asking him questions about the economy he could never answer, or pummeling him with a handbook of simple fixes OBVIOUS  to anyone who had ever worked a cash register.

Debates a trial for the wives too.

As a result, Romney didn’t come away with a unanimous decision and giant bi-partisan applause as he did in the first debate.  But if you don’t get it yet, you will.  Mitt Romney does nothing for applause.  He used this final debate as an opportunity to make undecideds and women secure with his abilities as Commander in Chief.  His goal was to make friends, not enemies.  A far cry from how Rick Santorum might have played it?  Newt Gingrich?  Even John McCain?  THAT’S why Mitt Romney is two weeks from the presidency.

Friends?????

The proof is in the pudding.  Romney won the debate, no matter WHAT CNN tries to say.  Today both Rasmussen and Gallup Polling have Governor Romney leading the President by at least four points, and probably five.

Americans have discovered that Mitt Romney is the real thing.  He doesn’t have to rely on smoke and mirrors.  He won’t sell his family down the river for an attractive aide.  He won’t have to call in an expert on global economies.  He IS the expert.

Romney could have made good television…instead he decided to be a statesman.

His tax returns can bare the light of day.  He doesn’t apologize for his record.  He owns his mistakes, and he corrects them.  In other words, if Mitt Romney is elected two weeks from today, the bar will be raised in Washington.

Harry Reid and all his bad acts, Nancy Pelosi and her profiting from office, and Barack Obama’s entire team of economic novices will have to …run for the hills.

  1. I’m impressed! This is a perspective that actually makes sense and does shed light on this gentleman’s character. He actually has integrity! Finally…there is HOPE for CHANGE!!

  2. I think Mitt Romney is too much of a gentleman to “go for the jugular.”  He really didn’t need to anyway.  I think he is the REAL DEAL.  I think he is very sincere and one of the things I like about him the most, he is a Christian and a great family man.  I say “GO MITT.”

  3. This article is one of the most honest pieces I have had the pleasure to  read regarding all the debates. It has  revealed Romneys humility as well as his grace in his attitude towards the current administration. Something special he posses that Obama can ever come close to I have come to respect Romney and find him sincere in his endeavors concerning our country’s better interest at large.in my heart, I believe he is the best man suited for the highest office in America, the President of the United States of America. I even feel proud as I write this to be able to say this for the first time in four years!

  4. I WAS KINDA UPSET WHEN HE DIDNT say anything about libya ……..but as the debate went on i understood  and i agree 100% of what the Gov. did and i know my vote will for the right person ROMNEY -RYAN  THE PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT  GOD BLESS BOTH AND GOD BLESS THE US OF A

  5. Excellent!  I couldn’t have said it any better.

  6. Romney was smart enough to let Obama paint himself into a corner with a snarky attitude, and so many blatantly false statements. Fact-checkers all over America had to be throwing their hands up in the air giving up waiting to watch the replay not being able to keep up.
Romney had to do three things: speak knowledgeably about world affairs; tie our economy to a ‘peace through strength’ mantra without appearing war-mongering, and have Presidential presence.
He accomplished all three goals successfully!
Obama’s sinking his own ship. Successfully.
Last night, Romney brilliantly let him do it.
November 6 will be here soon.

President Romney will be ready to stand up for ‘we, the people’ and America!

  7. Romney is a class act. The day he is sitting in our oval office isn’t soon enough! I look forward to having a President that I can be proud of!

  8. Isreal actually prefers Obama

As does every other country in this poll besides Pakistan who hid Bin Laden

  9. Plus he continued to lie
1). Romney denied calling Russia our number one enemy.
2). Romney tried to claim that he and Obama have equal status of forces positions on Iraq.
Obama wants to leave 3,000 troops in Iraq. Romney wants nothing less than 10,000-30,000. The two candidates’ positions aren’t equal. Romney wants more troops in Iraq than Obama does.
3). Romney said Obama was silent during the Green Revolution.
Here is the statement that Obama issues in June 2009, “The Iranian government must understand that the world is watching. We mourn each and every innocent life that is lost. We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people. The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights. As I said in Cairo, suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away. The Iranian people will ultimately judge the actions of their own government. If the Iranian government seeks the respect of the international community, it must respect the dignity of its own people and govern through consent, not coercion.”
4). Romney completely lied about his education record in Massachusetts.
Mitt Romney touted his record of making Massachusetts number one in education, but according to the Boston Globe his real record was quite different,  “His impact was inconsequential,” said Glen Koocher, executive director of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees. On the campaign trail, Romney proudly emphasizes Massachusetts’ national reputation for its stellar public K-12 education system. Bay State students routinely score at the top on national and international tests. But that achievement is largely credited to the state’s 1993 landmark education reform law that poured billions of dollars into schools, set academic standards, and spawned the standardized testing that Romney fiercely guarded.
5). Romney claimed that the US Navy has as many ships as it did in 1916.
According to CNN, the number of ships under Obama has risen slightly, “First, Romney said the Navy was at its lowest level in terms of number of ships since 1916. The fact is, he is not that far off, but any assessment of the Navy’s size — relative to its number of ships — needs to be taken in context. What Romney didn’t mention is that in 2007 under President George W. Bush, the Navy’s ship tally hit a low not seen since the 19th century, according to U.S. Navy statistics. Generally, between 2003 and 2011, the number of ships has fluctuated between a high of 297 and a low of 278. And under President Barack Obama, the number of ships has risen slightly.”

  10. Great article!!  Thanks so much for this very insightful perspective on the third presisential debate.   I agree with you in every aspect, but needed these carefully selected thoughts from you to be brought to the forefront.   God bless you richly!

  11. Great article!  Gives me hope.  Perhaps Dick Morris is right and Romney will win by a huge margin.  As long as Romney wins … and Obama is OUT much will be well again.

  12. Thank you for setting the standard of reasonable maturity and INTEGRITY during the debates. I am encouraging my son (age 12) to follow this election and see what types of things are being done by both sides. It is important to me that he see the CHRISTIAN in Romney as well as Presidential leadership. Handled like a true leader!!

  13. Wasn’t it refreshing to witness a potential presidential candidate with that kind of class!!??
