Everything You Need To Know About Rick Santorum

Running A Pure "Grassroots" Campaign Has Worked Pretty Well For Santorum

Until this year, Rick Santorum was most famous…for losing. After serving as a Pennsylvania congressman, and then being elected to the Senate in 1994, Santorum served two terms and then was soundly and unexpectedly defeated.  Surprised by the loss, Santorum turned to being a political commentator and went back into private practice as a lawyer.

In the past year, the former Senator has re-ignited his political career by running for President of the United States, and frankly, become “the little engine that could.”  Starting with nothing but aspirations and a pick-up truck, Rick Santorum has packed up his strong fiscal and social principles and won the Iowa, Colorado, Missouri and Minnesota Caucuses. Few delegates in those states have actually been awarded, but as far as campaign momentum goes Santorum has premium in his tank going into Super Tuesday.

What is it that has enabled former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum to take the national stage as a possible presidential candidate?

Santorum is a straight-talker in an era where voters won’t tolerate anything else from politicians.  Rick Santorum’s campaign is resonating with Tea Party and other deep conservatives who also cherish the Constitution and treasure Santorum’s devotion to issues such as Life, Marriage, and the recent attacks on freedom of religion for the Catholic Church and its healthcare systems.

Rick Santorum has ALWAYS stood by deep personal principles, and unlike Mitt Romney, doesn’t claim to have evolved on any of them.

Santorum & Romney: Two Strong Family Men

This is no doubt why Santorum has been able to go head to head with the former Governor of Massachusetts in the heartland, where deeply-held principles trump even economic skills.

Rick Santorum’s best calling card?  His family.  He is the father of eight children, and when he introduces them at press conferences or debates, his wife Karen, and his children demonstrate that Rick Santorum doesn’t just talk about family values, he lives them.

Few know that Santorum is also well-educated, something he has in common with Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul. Santorum has both a law degree and an M.B.A.  He has watched the workings of Capitol Hill for almost ten years.  He is a fierce, fiscal conservative.

Despite being on the “right side” of conservatism throughout his career, some of his alliances and compromises have perplexed his Pennsylvania constituents.  He voted for instance, in support of Sonia Sotomayor to the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in 1998 and she eventually became an Obama Supreme Court appointee, when virtually every other conservative in the Senate opposed her appointment.  He endorsed Senator Arlen Spector when he dipped his toe into the presidential waters in 1996.  Spector later turned Democrat and was remarkably Pro-Choice.  These moves didn’t help when Senator Santorum ran for re-election.  Nor did his highly-public positions on union issues.  Representing a union-friendly state, Santorum has often sided with Big Labor:

Santorum To Close For Comfort With Big Labor?

“Not only has he refused to answer the National Right to Work Committee’s Presidential Survey, but while in the Senate he joined with Democrats to filibuster the National Right to Work Act. Siding with Big Labor in favor of union boss forced dues powers should be particularly troubling to the people of South Carolina, who’ve spent the last year fighting off attacks by the Obama Labor Board on the state’s popular Right to Work law and the jobs it has helped create. As a senator, it turns out, Santorum voted in favor of letting states decide on right-to-work laws—which outlaw “union shops” allowing nonunion workers to enjoy bargaining benefits without paying dues. But at a GOP presidential debate last weekend, Santorum said that he now supports a National Right to Work Law. The candidate said he didn’t vote for one in the U.S. Senate “because Pennsylvania’s not a right-to-work state and I didn’t want to vote for a law that would change the law in Pennsylvania.”

These votes and a sometimes contentious way in Washington, didn’t help Rick Santorum when he sought Republican help in fighting a tough re-election battle against fellow Pennsylvanian Bob Casey, Jr., the son of a popular former Governor.

But all of these issues seem to be in the past as Rick Santorum runs a lean and consistent campaign for the presidency.  He is now passing by Newt Gingrich, who seems wounded after losing Florida and his big, million dollar Las Vegas funder.  Santorum didn’t just beat Mitt Romney this past week, he beat Newt Gingrich in Colorado, Minnesota and of course Missouri…where Gingrich failed to qualify for the ballot.

Rick Santorum and His 8th Child, Bella

Perhaps the most engaging side of the tough, but compassionate Rick Santorum?  His ailing, young daughter Bella.  The Santorums exhibit all of the qualities Americans cherish in a traditional family, and they demonstrate every day that every LIFE….matters.

  1. Who wrote this disgusting drivel?  Clearly it was a person who has done zero research into Sen. Santorum’s career outside of what his campaign has told them.  And clearly someone who hasn’t read the Constitution.  As a Conservative, I’m offended that anyone could possible believe what is written here about this control freak of a man.
